“Mitochondria hack” has become one of the most-used phrases in wellness marketing. The underlying biology is genuinely real and genuinely interesting. The word “hack” is doing an enormous amount of dishonest work.

This article is the biology without the sales pitch: what mitochondria actually do, what the phrase “mitochondrial dysfunction” means when a doctor says it versus when an advert says it, and what is genuinely known to improve mitochondrial capacity — ranked honestly, strongest evidence first.

What Mitochondria Actually Do

Mitochondria are organelles inside almost every cell in your body. Their central job is producing ATP — the molecule your cells spend to do essentially everything, from contracting a muscle to firing a neuron to running a sodium pump.

They do this through oxidative phosphorylation: nutrients from food are broken down, electrons pass along a chain of protein complexes in the mitochondrial membrane, and the energy released is used to generate ATP. Oxygen is the final electron acceptor, which is the actual reason you breathe.

A few facts that make the picture clearer:

  • Density varies enormously by tissue. Heart muscle cells are packed with mitochondria because they never rest. Skin cells have comparatively few. Your body allocates them according to demand.
  • They carry their own DNA. Mitochondrial DNA is separate from the DNA in your cell nucleus and is inherited exclusively from your mother.
  • The population is dynamic. Mitochondria divide, fuse, and are recycled when damaged — a quality-control process called mitophagy. New ones are built through mitochondrial biogenesis, largely coordinated by a regulator called PGC-1α.

That last point is the important one. Because the population responds to demand, it can genuinely be increased. That part of the marketing is not a lie. The question is what actually triggers it.

“Mitochondrial Dysfunction” Means Two Very Different Things

This is where most wellness content quietly misleads people, so it is worth separating clearly.

The clinical meaning. Primary mitochondrial diseases are a group of serious, relatively rare genetic conditions — MELAS, Leigh syndrome, mitochondrial myopathies and others. They are diagnosed by specialists using genetic testing, muscle biopsy and specific biochemical markers. They typically involve muscle weakness, neurological signs and organ involvement, not simply feeling tired. No supplement treats them.

The marketing meaning. A much looser idea: that ordinary fatigue in otherwise healthy adults is caused by mitochondria running below capacity, and that this is correctable with a product. This is not a recognised diagnosis. There is no test your doctor can run to confirm it, which is convenient for anyone selling the solution, because a condition that cannot be measured also cannot be shown not to have improved.

It is true that mitochondrial function declines with age and is affected by inactivity, poor sleep and metabolic disease. It does not follow that your specific tiredness is mitochondrial, and it certainly does not follow that a capsule is the fix.

What Actually Increases Mitochondrial Capacity, Ranked

1. Endurance exercise — not close

This is the single best-established way to increase mitochondrial density in humans, and it is not a marginal effect. Sustained aerobic training raises PGC-1α signalling and measurably increases both the number and efficiency of mitochondria in trained muscle. It is one of the most replicated findings in exercise physiology.

Practically: moderate, conversational-pace aerobic work — brisk walking, cycling, swimming — accumulated across the week, is the foundation. Higher-intensity intervals produce similar adaptations in less time but are harder to sustain and recover from. Neither requires a gym.

2. Resistance training

Building and preserving muscle matters because muscle is metabolically expensive tissue with a high mitochondrial load. This becomes progressively more important from your thirties onward, as age-related muscle loss accelerates. Two sessions a week is a meaningful dose.

3. Sleep

Sleep deprivation impairs glucose handling, raises oxidative stress and disrupts the repair processes that clear damaged mitochondria. If you are consistently sleeping under six hours, that is the leak in the bucket, and everything else is pouring water in faster.

Worth ruling out obstructive sleep apnoea if you snore, wake unrefreshed after adequate hours, or have been told you stop breathing at night. It is common, frequently missed in women, and treatable.

4. Nutritional adequacy

Note the word: adequacy, not optimisation. The electron transport chain genuinely requires iron, B vitamins, magnesium and CoQ10 to function. If you are deficient in one of these, correcting it can produce a real and sometimes dramatic improvement. If you are not deficient, adding more does very little — this is a threshold effect, not a dose-response curve.

This is exactly why testing matters more than supplementing blind. Iron deficiency in particular is extremely common in menstruating women and causes profound fatigue, and no botanical blend will touch it.

5. Botanical supplements — last, and honestly so

Compounds like epicatechin from cocoa, astaxanthin and adaptogens such as rhodiola have research suggesting effects on mitochondrial signalling or fatigue perception. That research is mostly preliminary, often preclinical, and typically shows small effects where it shows any.

They belong on this list. They belong at the bottom of it. Anyone presenting a supplement as the primary lever has the ranking upside down.

Why the Marketing Gets This Backwards

The commercial incentive is obvious: nobody earns a commission on you going for a walk. But there is a subtler reason the framing is appealing, and it is worth naming because it is aimed at you deliberately.

“Your mitochondria are underperforming” is a comforting explanation. It is specific enough to sound scientific, invisible enough that it cannot be disproven, and it locates the problem somewhere that is not your fault and not your effort. Adverts that add “your doctor will not tell you about this” are doing something more troubling still — encouraging you to discount the one person who can actually order the tests that find a real cause.

If you are persistently exhausted, the useful sequence is: see your doctor, get the standard bloods, address sleep and activity, and only then consider whether a supplement adds anything at the margin.

Yes. Mitochondrial biogenesis is a real, well-documented process. The reliable trigger in humans is sustained physical demand — which is to say, exercise.

How long does it take?

Measurable changes in mitochondrial enzyme activity in trained muscle appear within a few weeks of consistent aerobic training. Perceived energy often improves before that, partly through sleep and mood.

Is there a test for mitochondrial function?

For suspected primary mitochondrial disease, yes — specialist genetic and biochemical testing. For the general “sluggish mitochondria” idea sold in wellness marketing, no. Be sceptical of any direct-to-consumer test claiming to measure it.

Does CoQ10 help?

CoQ10 is a genuine component of the electron transport chain, and supplementation has reasonable evidence in specific situations — notably statin-associated muscle symptoms. For healthy adults with normal levels, evidence of an energy benefit is weak. Note that CoQ10 is not an ingredient in Mitolyn, despite being widely misattributed to it.
